Making Furniture : How to convert a carport into a garage and choosing the doors

Woodworking has gained massive popularity over the past few years. Many people feel a sense of completion by making their own furniture for their home. Starting woodworking,
though, is a bit more difficult than for other hobbies. This quick guide will get you started so that you can make your own furniture.

First, go to your local hardware store and get some measuring tools. You will need the basics: a ruler, a tape measure, and a protractor. These supplies are with school items, and you can get them all for only a few dollars. Check a discount store or local retailer.

You may want to get a level, especially if you plan to make larger or more intricate pieces. A level allows you to measure straight lines so that your furniture is aligned correctly.

When you come home with your tools, find a place to begin your work. You will need to purchase a saw, and so you need a work table. There is no particular kind of saw you
need; ask for help at your local hardware store.

One easy option for a saw is a circular saw. These are easily controlled and work well with wood, even if you are a novice. Circular saws typically are $100 or less, especially for a more simplistic version. The saw basically has a circular blade with a hard covering on it
for protection. The saw has a base that you sit on the wood and run through saw through.

Table top saws also come in many varieties of shape, size, and functionality. Choose a saw based on your previous experience. You don't want to get a saw that you - as a beginner - will not be able to work with. On the other hand, you don't want a saw that won't grow with you, so look for some versatility.

Now that you have the materials to make the furniture, you should look for finishing materials so that you will have a beautiful piece when you're done. You will need the basic assembling tools for your furniture. Anyone who's done any housework should have many of them already. You need a hammer, screwdriver, bits, and clamps. Other supplies, such as chisels and hand planes, will permit you to put touches of elegance on your furniture. These supplies are all available at your local hardware store where you should feel free to ask for help.

Along with assembling materials, you will need finishing products. Sandpaper, steel wool, and scrapers are the basic finishing supplies. These items will let you create a smooth surface that can be painted, stained, or otherwise decorated. You should pick out the stains and paints during this part of the process as well.

While it looks as if you need many, many items, remember that many of them are very inexpensive. The beginner's tools are less than $2 each. You can find stains and paints
inexpensively as well. Look for deals, especially on the larger items like the saw. Wait for sales and other specials, and then get started!

Convert A Carport into a Garage

Back in the 60's and 70's, builders in the south often saved money building carports on houses instead of a garages.

Garages provide security and privacy, so if you currently have a carport and want to make it into a garage its not too hard or too expensive to do. In fact, a carport can be enclosed to make a garage very easliy and much less expensively than building a separate shed.

First there are some things that you need to consider before you begin your project.

First, you should find out how many walls you will need to build to enclose your carpot. Some carports only need to have one wall built to enclose them, others need 2 walls.

If the back and one side of your carport is open, then you will have to build two walls instead of one and your costs to do the project will be basically doubled.

But don't get discouraged if you do have to build two walls because the good news is that you don't have to add additional roof or foundation. These areas are the most expensive parts of any structure. So when I say two walls double your cost, it does not total up to more than $400 - $600 extra.

Once you have figured out how many walls you need to build to enclose your carport, you need to create an estimate of how much it is going to cost to do the job.

Its easy to estimate the cost of your project. First you create a list of the materials that you will need to do the project and then bring your list to lumber yard to have them give you the prices for the materials you need. If you tell them what you are doing, they may even help you make the material list.

The list of materials you will need should look something like this:

2 x 4's or 2 x 6's- for studs in walls
Pressure treated 2 x 4s - for bottom of wall (bottom plate)
Garage door complete with track and opener
CDX plywood or chip board-for sheathing (to enclose garage)
CDX plywood, pegboard etc - for inside of wall insulation
Vinyl siding or brick veneer

After you get the prices for the materials you just need to make sure you include taxes on the materials in your area so you won't be surprised and go over your budget.

Now you need to calculate the labor it will take to do the work. The amount of time needed will depend on how the details of your project. A typical framing job including trim work should take 3-4 days for 2-3 men.

Call a garage door installation company and get a price to provide and install the garage door. Installing a garage door is a little tricky if you aren't mechanically inclined and haven't done it before. You will be glad you hired a pro to do this part of your project and you would not have saved that much money anyway because they get wholesale pricing on the doors and you won't.

Next you need to call a garage door company to get a price to provide and install the garage door. A garage door can be a little tricky to install and you don't want to take a chance on installing it incorrectly and having it come down on your car or injure somebody. You'll be glad you hired a pro to do this part of your project. You aren't going to save much money anyway because they get wholesale pricing on the doors and you won't.

All you have to do now is add the labor, materials and subcontracted cost (the garage door installation) and the profit, you will get a good picture of how much the project to enclose your garage will cost.

If you have a a contractor do the work turnkey for you, expect to pay from $3000 to $8,000 depending on what area of the country you are in and the construction of your house.

 Choosing the Doors

More often than not, doors are the focal point of any room. Therefore, when constructing a new house, building an addition or just replacing a worn out door - you need to select something that is high quality and pleasing to the eye. The art is in seeking the right type of doors in all respects.

A little study will bring out that there is a great variety available in terms of doors. While some are functional and plain, others are fancy and ornamental, yet others are sturdy and rugged and unique. Before you head out to your local building stores, you should know the different types of doors and what they are best used for.

The entry doors are those on the outside of your house and people enter and exit the house through them. Although you may have several, the front door is usually an item that people first notice when they look at your house. A good design plan will include a door that complements the rest of the home and even serves as a focal point. Also, we usually welcome visitors at the front door so it should make a welcoming statement. You can find plain entry doors, but the more creative and artistic looking are more popular.

Entry doors come in a variety of materials, including wood, fiberglass, or steel. Unlike wood, the steel and fiberglass ones are efficient insulators. For a different look, think about some glass inlays in the door. You will find many choices and as far as price is concerned, entry doors can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars.

Patio doors are similar to entry doors as far as simplicity or extravaganza is concerned. They are needed in each home and the most common type of patio door is the sliding door.
Despite the fact that the sliding door is getting out of fashion, it continues to be the most utilitarian. It allows you to have a full window without worrying about providing enough room for a door to open. This is especially important in small apartments where the space is very limited.

French doors are very popular right now and they look simply stunning in a room when they open out onto a beautiful patio. They typically have a grid-like design that adds a nice addition to a room and an almost Oriental feel. You can find a variety of French doors with different colors and styling to suit your home.

In addition to the entry door and the patio door you may want to add a storm door. A storm door is great in the summer for letting some fresh air in the house or a little more light. Storm doors are not the best choice if you require insulation but they a nice touch to a house, especially if the front room tends to get a little dark. You can find storm doors in a variety of materials, such as metal screens or glass.

When you first think about doors, making choices sounds easy. In fact these purchases require a degree of thought. Doors are looked at everyday and they also welcome your
visitors. A new door can provide a whole new look to the exterior. Shop carefully so you'll find the right door at a price you can afford.
